CES Sustainability
Requirement – NEW!

During the March 2008 AIA National Board of Directors meeting, it was approved that beginning January 1, 2009 the AIA would require all members to complete four (4) hours of sustainable design. These 4 Sustainable Design (SD) hours would be included as part of the current 8 hour / HSW requirement. They are not additional hours to the 18/8 LU hours that the AIA already requires. This requirement would run until 2012, at which time it will be evaluated.

Sustainable Design (SD) Learning Units

Sustainable design is achieved through an integrated design and delivery process that enhances the natural and built environment by using energy sensibly with a goal toward carbon neutrality, improves air and water quality, protects and preserves water and other resources, and creates environments, communities and buildings that are livable, comfortable, productive, diverse, safe, and provide enduring value to our community and society as a whole.

AEC Daily Expands Continuing Education
With Its First AIA-Approved Video Podcast!

The first AIA-approved video podcast series is now available on AEC Daily. Whirlpool Corporation and School teamed up to create five AIA-approved episodes of The Sketchup Show, a free weekly video podcast School produces (www.go-2-school.com). The five episodes focus on designing residential spaces using SketchUp Software and 3-D models from the new Sweets3D Collection in the Google SketchUp 3D Warehouse.

The Whirlpool sponsored episodes of The Sketchup Show examine designing a case study home, including a residential kitchen, laundry space, outdoor kitchen and garage space. Users will also learn how to import 3-D appliance models from Whirlpool Corporation brands within their designs. For architects who prefer hand sketching, the podcasts include content on using hand drawings in combination with SketchUp.

Video is ideal for this type of course because of the need to demonstrate how to use the software. The animation provides an important value-added component to the education.

AEC Daily and AEC Info

AEC Daily Makes European Connection

Leading Continuing Education Provider and Oldest Online Product Library join forces to extend value to AEC community.

BATIMAT, PARIS, FRANCE – November 14, 2005

AEC Daily Corporation, a Delaware Corporation and AEC Info, a division of Docu Group AG in Switzerland, have formed a strategic alliance to integrate their specialties into each other’s websites.

AEC Daily’s building product directory will now be managed by AEC Info. Conversely, AEC Daily’s continuing education program will be integrated into AEC Info. By leveraging each others’ strengths, the two companies will significantly improve the information services they provide to the AEC industry.

AEC Info is the oldest building product directory on the web. Through their parent at the Docu Group AG and their alliance with Reed Elsevier Group PLC, they have the most experience in publishing electronic directories for the construction industry. The combination of the two construction directories will create the most comprehensive building product database in the world.

AEC Daily has become the leader in distance learning by building an educational resource that provides a great variety of quality education, at no cost to the participant, in all areas of the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction industry. With 67 free courses and more coming weekly, the Online Learning Center is one of the most important features of the AEC Daily Corporation. Its current and future courses have been designed to meet all state and professional continuing education requirements.

“We believe that this relationship will strengthen both our positions as world leaders in the AEC industry.” said Jeff Rice, President of AEC Daily. “While we both provide marketing opportunities for building product manufacturers, our respective services are more complimentary than competitive.”

The relationship is already expanding the reach of AEC Daily’s worldwide network. Though AEC Info’s Reed Elsevier connection, AEC Daily is currently working on further expansion in Europe and Australia.

About AEC Daily:
AEC Daily provides access to educational resources, building products information, industry news, discussion forums and much more. The services of AEC Daily are made available to architects, engineers, owners, interior designers, and construction professionals at no charge.

CSI Offers
Online Education
Courses on
AEC Daily

Alexandria, Va. (April 12, 2006): The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and AEC Daily have launched the first of 10 online education modules for the Construction Documents Education Program. Topics available thus far include:

* Introduction and Overview of Construction Documents
* Construction Documents
* Agreements, Contract Document and Document Relationships
* Project Delivery Concepts
* Conditions of the Contract
* Procurement and Project Document Modifications

These courses are available free of charge and are a recommended resource for individuals participating in the Construction Documents Technology (CDT) Program. The online courses do not replace the official CDT study guide, which is available at www.csinet.org (click "Certification"). The CDT certificate program is designed to enhance participant’s knowledge of writing, interpreting, enforcing, or managing construction documents.

To earn the CDT designation, participants must successfully complete a comprehensive two-hour examination. Project architects, contractors, contract administrators, material suppliers, and manufacturers’ representatives are all realizing the advantages of being Construction Documents Technologists.

Professionals who pass the CDT exam may use the suffix "CDT" after their names. The CDT exam was recently revised to reflect the Project Resource Manual – The CSI Manual of Practice.

"CSI online courses are excellent avenues for continuing education," said Tracy Lofty, CSI’s Director of Professional Development. "You’re able to complete a course at a time and location convenient for you. In addition, you will receive one hour of AIA/CES Learning Units, which is equivalent to .1 CEUs."

 Why Manage Moisture When You Can Simply Forgive it.

You might arrive, as many architects have, at the conclusion that the flip side of designing energy efficient structures is moisture forgiveness: a material’s ability to compensate for moisture in the environment. Georgia-Pacific accomplishes this by substituting fiberglass mats for traditional paper facings. A process we’ve been perfecting for 20 years and offer for both the building envelope and interior wall systems. Moisture forgiveness. Adding life to buildings. Reducing exposure to risk of delay and remediation. Slicing days from schedules. You owe it to yourself to get the whole story. Visit www.buildpaperless.com to learn more.

All courses are available free of charge.
